Painting is all about trusting the process and my intuition while being open to the unpredictable. Each painting begins with layers of texture that serve as the ground to which I respond. Colors are layered with repeated building up and rubbing off. Where they overlap, a new color is created and often shifts the direction of the painting. I embrace these surprises, which lead me down a challenging new path.
Investigating the layers of my paintings serves as a metaphor for exploring an energy or spirit beyond the physical world. Shapes are imbued with meaning. As a universal symbol, the circle represents nature’s cycles, no beginning/no end, unity, the limitless and the boundless. The square symbolizes perfect balance, stability, the four seasons, the four directions, the four noble truths, and the four corners and points to universal truths passed down through the ages.

Animation has always fascinated me. Whether it's a cartoon character scurrying across the screen or a marionette dancing the jig, there is something magical about an inanimate object coming to life through movement.
My sculptures are studies in balance. The kinetic drama is accentuated through positive and negative space, light, gravity, and air. Visual texture evolves from an array of materials. Each piece is a fusion of layers that intersect and overlap suggesting lines and forms found in nature.

While living in the present, I hope for the future and learn from the past. A deep fascination with history, especially the Civil War, is the inspiration for portraying our heritage on canvas. Although a controversial and tumultuous time in our nation's history, those hardships and strife shaped much of who we are today: people of faith, character and strength. I seek to tell those stories with understanding and honor. As for the subject matter, I ask for empathy rather than sympathy and understanding above criticism.

Grounded in abstract expressionism, my work joins the visual pleasure of painting with the audio impact of music. On my palette, each of the twelve hues corresponds to a musical note or jazz progression within a major or minor key. The juxtaposition of color, line, and shape affect the perception of the painted image just as notes, progressions, and chords come together in a jazz composition. My hope is that you will hear a sound or a vibration as you look.

My work explores and documents the joy of physical movement, from dancing to running and everything in between.
I equate metal work with my athletic endeavors. Forcing the material to conform to a vision is challenging, physical labor. The large, abstract shapes almost always begin with something witnessed in daily life or experienced on a run. The sculptures are engraved with layers of ornamental patterns that reinforce the theme, while their reflective surfaces react to surrounding color as a dancer responds to music.
